SFCH Pediatric Healing Environment/ 2020
This project focused on preserving and extending the Studer Family Children's Hospital brand through a child- and family-centered healing environment. The goal was to support children and caregivers during high-stress clinical moments while keeping the experience consistent with the hospital's broader service vision.
Our team concentrated on three connected spaces: PACU, PICU, and PICU Family. Through analysis of service context and patient demographics, we developed an "Aquarium" narrative for the PICU expansion and translated it into coordinated physical and digital touchpoints. The design approach balanced cohesion across the unit with distinct spatial identities for each area.
The result was a flexible, colorful, and calming environment designed to reduce anxiety and improve day-to-day experience for patients, families, and staff. AR-enabled mural interactions and inclusive learning activities introduced gentle visual, auditory, and cognitive engagement, extending the healing environment beyond static graphics.
