UVA Therapeutic Playroom/ 2020

This project focused on designing a therapeutic playroom at UVA Children's Hospital as part of a broader healing environment strategy. The core goal was to support pediatric recovery by creating a space where play could reduce stress and help children maintain a sense of normalcy during hospitalization.

The design approach treated play as a therapeutic system rather than a standalone activity zone. We balanced playful interaction with clinical needs, using nature-based visual language and calming environmental cues to support emotional regulation, family comfort, and day-to-day care routines.

The outcome was a more intentional play environment that functioned as part of the child's overall care journey, not just a distraction space. By integrating therapeutic and experiential qualities in one setting, the project strengthened how design could support both healing and engagement for patients and families.
